First time I heard that Flo & Eddie song was this year too; off Late Night with the Devil. Honestly thought it was a contemporary tune meant to sound retro.
Never would I have guessed that Gucci Mane's Lemonade was a sample, let alone a sample from a 70s Power-Pop song.
Won't pretend I 'discovered' any of these songs and am probably a Yohan-come-lately for some of 'em, but they were new to me this year:
Mac Dre - Do The Crew featuring Jay Tee
Fat Boys - Can You Feel It?
World Class Wreckin' Cru - Juice
Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde - Champagne Of Rap (first time I ever listened to the entire album, loved it)
Cazal Boys - Snatching Cazals
Uncle Jamm's Army - What's Your Sign
Brand Nubian - Alladat
Black Sheep - Autobiographical
Big Mello - Back Do Akshun
Positive K - Can U Dig It featuring Grand Puba
Potna Deuce - Cool Thang
Big Mike - Daddy's Gone featuring Scarface
The Luniz - Doin' Dirt
G-Slimm - Four's Deuce's & Tray's
Da Youngsta's - Hip-Hop Ride
Freddie Foxxx - So Tough (Video Mix)
Gangsta Pat - Deadly Verses
Andre Nickatina - Killa Whale
The U.N. - Ain't No Thang
The Team - Gangsters Talkin'
R.A. The Rugged Man - How Low
Pitbull - Hustler's Withdrawal
South Coast Coalition - Murder Man Dance featuring Boosie
Big Tuck - Southside Da Realist (both the O.G. and the extended version - can't get enough of this song)
Beanie Sigel - What's The Scenario? featuring Peedi Crakk
D.R.A.M. - Cha Cha
Doughboyz Cashout - City Of Dealers
Cousin Fik - Go Ape featuring E-40
Nef The Pharaoh - M.A.C.
Mic Terror - N.W.G.
Caskey - So Bad
Cashy - Stupendous
King Louie - Til I Met Selena
Bandman Kevo - Wanna Go
List turned out longer than I expected. You put me on a bunch of these songs, stumbled on others through others and found a few of them myself. There's more but these I can trace through playlists I made.
I'm glad to see someone else feels the same way about Caskey's So Bad as me.
Ugk - Funky Connection
Whoa, I've never heard that one before.
Damn just checked in after a while and saw that there is no post about Saafir when he passed. Can´t take you serious anymore dude :(
Two compilations of 80s-ish boogie/dance music that I heard playing at hipster wine bar in Buenos Aires this fall: Psychemagik Presents Magik Cyrkles and Sintesis Moderna: An Alternative Vision of Argentinian Music (1980-1990)
I'd never listened to him except his guest appearances on Casual and Digital Underground songs before he died ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I still haven't heard Boxcar Sessions.
Peak Maradona years.
Damn man I'm no saafir expert but street scene is my fav song of his, that albums teb only one that I was into, gotta dig deeper into him tho he's the shit. Dunno how to asky the gif of Arnie n Carl weathers bear hugging but that's me rn
Wish the zippyfile connect was still coming through in these comments :(
Where's the French lads when you need 'em eh?
By far the best non-2024 rap discovery for me is Rappin Ron' - All The Turfs In The O from his demo: https://youtu.be/wVeKXZpEo_0?feature=shared
9 minutes of classic Oakland "don't stop rapping" Funk, with him going through, well, All The Turfs In The O. Would love it if the other songs off the demo would resurface too.
Other favorites non-24 rap songs I've discovered he last year:
Taylor Boyz - 28 Grams: https://youtu.be/ZcxswjJZQTI?feature=shared
15-3 - Ride-N-Creep: https://youtu.be/rmunOU0yrT0?feature=shared
(Thanks to thehotboxsocial 2000s Indiana Rap comp, lots of heat on this one)
C-Ordell - Land Of The Living https://youtu.be/OWHtv8APw0Y?feature=shared
Non-rap late pass discoveries:
Shock - Shock Talk https://youtu.be/soWKCQNX-3Q?feature=shared
Killer 80's boogie funk with guitar and moog solos. The whole album is cool but this final track is just >>>>>>>
Ultimate Truth - Take A Vacation From Life (And Visit Your Dreams): https://youtu.be/EJ0yEomk3sU?feature=shared
Slow soulful jam.
Curtis Mayfield - Billy Jack: https://youtu.be/V0QX2aBbYTM?feature=shared
Wasn't familiar with that album until I picked up a copy in March, this one's the opening track and it's been on repeat all year.
Also got into some great albums by Bobby Hutcherson (Montara, latin jazz bliss, and Cruisin' The Bird, smooth 80's jams), Waylon Jennings - The Tulsa Taker, and a lot of early 90's Death Metal haha.
Can't beat Billy Jack.
Just checked the Shock and Rappin' Ron songs. Both 🔥
I could probably do a list of like 500 of these this year. I’ve returned to buying old vinyl w a vengeance. Here is just a slice but if you dig where im coming from consider buying a mix cd from me ;-)
Aku Aku - The Night Belongs to Charlie (1984)
Mid 80s disco funk rock song about the tet offensive I found in a bin in Brooklyn
Mike Walsh - Had It, Done It, Been There, Did That (NY Nasty Mix) (1993)
Song that must have been used in some Dj mix or just hit the algorithm in the right way where it went from selling for less than $10 to selling for $100+ just a couple of months ago, great acapella and some fun alternate versions
Alien - Video Games (Get In Your Brain) (1982)
What did they know about gamer gate and when did they know it ….
Bobby Hutcherson - NTU (1974)
Honestly just heard about this from a ILX post but it has me revisiting his whole catalog, had that loopy repetitiveness which ages best
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - My Bag (Dancing Mix) (Francois K version) (1987)
Polydor all is forgiven for releasing that wack version of “Tibetan jam”… although make sure you get the francois version of this
Cassandra Complex - Angels in the Sky (1987)
Jerry Falwell samples over uptempo industrial beat that was a popular hit in the Spanish Bakalao scene … best fake Keith Leblanc (RIP) beat category
Sunscreem - perfect motion (boys own remix) (1992)
Crazy how a quality heller/farley remix can uplift a record)
The Vision - Laidback & Groovy (1991)
A Nu Groove Classic that judging from the YouTube comments became a hit in South Africa
Peter Gabriel - Mercy Street (William Orbit remix) (1991)
William orbit was ahead of his time at this point
I love that Sunscreem remix. Used to get a lotta play at the Melt Down Zone raves I went to as a teen in 1993. Will peep the others.
I wish more people did late pass lists like these.
