Pop goes the Ecstasy & Jalil

Whodini ft. Peter Gunz & Lord Tariq - Can't Get Enough
(From Six album; 1996)

The highlight of Whodini's 1996 comeback album on So So Def Records. Some pop-bass chauvinism par excellence with Whodini and Peter Gunz & Lord Tariq sounding surprisingly buddy-buddy together on the pan-generational tip. Basically, it's the best Sporty Thievz song not recorded by Sporty Thievz.

What are the essential Whodini songs/projects?

The 3 albums from the 80s.

Can still remember HHC comparing the intro to Deja Vu (Uptown Baby) with the theme from The Antiques Roadshow.

😄 It really does sound like that.

Is this album any good?

Not really, no. You'll probably like the song with Lost Boyz tho.

I do like that lol. Lost Boyz were dope!

Six has a few songs that kinda work? "If You Want It", the "Keep Running Back" Remix, this one. It's at least better than it should be really.

Kelvin Mack10zie said...

If You Want It is definitely the best of the So So Def Type Tracks™

"escape" by whodini is really better than like 80% of most generic "best of the 80s" ass rap albums... those synthesizers are forever

Them Larry Smith & Davy DMX productions 💘

im afraid that 'be my lady' feat r kelly is the actual highlight ... ive changed my name so no one can trace this back to me ...

As a side note its insane that the first whodini album has a beat by conny plank. "rap machine" still sounds incredible!! whodini appear in the conny plank documentary I just watched on amazon

Blew my mind when I found out Thomas Dolby did Magic's Wand. He REALLY should have done more Rap beats.

after running back "back in black" that one has some fucking heat on it too... one love... i'm a ho!!! (the perfect companion piece to "treat her like a prostitue honestly hahah) -- is "open sesame" any good or ...?

thomas dolby working with whodini and joni mitchell within two years of eachother is wiiiiild

Kelvin Mack10zie said...

I've never heard Open Sesame or anything off it.

Didnt know of that song or album, but it might be the best thing Gunz & Tariq ever did, I had their one cd and ended up selling it, I remember it as being really dull.

Peter Gunz & Lord Tariq were definitely a One Song Wonder for Deja Vu (Uptown Baby). But Lord Tariq was excellent as a member of Money Boss Players and his solo track This Cold World was a white label minor classic.

Ah nice, I had no idea he was in MBP - I used to love that Killed The Crap Game song with the gritty guitar lick.

Also the track you posted is really good, thanks. Not sure but it sounds like a Sonny & Cher sample, always cool.

That sample gains its entry into the Hard Knock Life-core canon.
