35 comments:
+ Cypress Hill track from the Juice soundtrack
Pac, Curtis or Isaac Hayes who got the most banging song on here if yall had to choose
Gene Pitney.
Really good list. I just rewatched Juice and had forgotten about all the great music in it. I would also include the Cypress Hill/Sonic Youth track from Judgment Night, "Knockin On Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan, "Trust" by Prince, "Only When It Rains" by John Buck Wilkins, and I guess "Lose Yourself" is sort of a classic.
Faith No More & Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E song from Judgement Night OST was on the O.G list draft before I faced the unfortunate truth that I prefer U2's Desire.
Craig Mack "Wooden horse"
Schoolly D "The Signifyin' Rapper"
Canibus, Wyclef & Youssou NDour "How come"
Geto Boys "still"
Dan Aykroyd & Tom hanks "Drag Net Rap"
No Schooly D?
Schoolly's King Of New York theme is hokey, imo. Signifying Rapper is definitely an honourable mention, though.
Side note: the King Of New York DVD menu screen with the loop of Walken doing THAT dance as Saturday Night plays is one of the G.O.A.T marriages of music & moving image.
What about Joe Walsh - In The City?
Glaring ommission alert! 👏
Might swap Paramedic! for that. In The City is perfect, while Paramedic! is slightly sullied by the shitty 20 intro which was clearly bolted on.
Fave Rap song recorded for a soundtrack which ended up shelved:
Dru Down - In Jail (1996/2008)
(Supposed to be on the Original Gangstas OST.)
https://youtu.be/xLvlGVNInw4
I wish ghostbusters movies were actually about them poor souls that decided to die instead of thizz
I have a feeling Forever by Schooly D was recorded for The Addiction but the movie happened to come out shortly after Reservoir Dog
Great list.
Is Kermode's moustache real?
Think I'll try later on and compile a list too.
Muzzie's fake.
Obvs you need to do a list.
New Jersey Drive soundtrack was badass, an so was the movie by the way. Underrated piece of 90's blaxploitation, if there ever was such a genre.
The Original Ganstas soundtrack also had a lot of good songs on it, not sure how many were recorded specifically for the movie though. The Spice-1 is up there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iyNijR60Eo
Speaking of blaxploitation, Bobby Womack's Across 110th Street and Willie Hutch's I Choose You for The Mack are also classics. Both movie are worth watching too, some of the bests of the genre.
Nice to see John Lurie for Down By Law as well. Doesn't matter how you feel about Jarmusch's film, you can't deny the guy has good taste when it comes to soundtracks as well.
Also a non-rap favorite of mine is The Long Goodbye, for the Altman movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG0ykzh47q8
Excellent 70's melancholic neo-noir. There's different takes of the same song on the OST but I'll go for this one.
Now I'm a sucker for westerns as well, and on some days's you'll catch me singing somes tunes like Dean Martin - My Rifle, My Pony and Me (Rio Bravo), Peggy Lee - Johnny Guitar, Frankie Laine - 3 10 To Yuma (the OG one) or The Man Without A Star.
This is such a vast subject, I could go on for hours. Let's not get started on French movie soundtracks from the 90's as well (La Haine, Ma 6-T Va Crack-Er etc.)
Good call on My Rifle, My Pony and Me.
Personal fave slap from the Original Gangstas OST is XO by the Luniz (as much for the scene it comes from as the song itself.)
Harlem Clavinette from Across 110th Street OST is a definite honourable mention.

Killed it. Damn, I didn't even realise Call Me was recorded especially for American Gigalo because that'd be a no brainer inclusion.
Hot Wheels (The Chase) aka the song so good it almost made Blade listenable 😄
I had to double check Call Me, to make sure. I also thought Guns 'N' Roses' Appetite For Destruction was first heard on The Dead Pool, but I might have my wires crossed with their cameo in the film:
https://youtu.be/43EJTd6cSZ8
Broke my heart picking only one Carpenter, Nicolai and Carpenter track.

Spartan and Barber came up with some badass lists.
Just realized no one named It's Hard Out There For A Pimp, song was pretty good and just the pleasure alone of seeing Three Six winning an Oscar made it all worth.
A bunch of other good ones I remembered after posting the other day:
Jonathan Richman - There's Something About Mary
Ice Cube - Ghetto Vet

Need more people stanning for songs from The Lost Boys OST up in here.
The Lost Boys soundtrack is sick. Also, Kenny Powers listening to "Cry Little Sister" in his car is low key one of the funniest moments on Eastbound and Down.

Just realized Batman Forever and Empire Records came out the same year. Was 1995 the year of the great soundtrack/shitty movie?
Hah, yes definitely.
Unless it was movies with soundtracks comprised of old songs (Casino and Dead Presidents.)

Mario Van Peebles - Sweetback's Theme
Prince - Kiss
