Vince FM

Vincent Gallo - Drowning In Brown
(From Buffalo '66 soundtrack; 1998)

Drowning In Brown from Vincent Gallo's Buffalo '66 soundtrack is the best Check Your Head instrumental interlude which the Beastie Boys never recorded. Someone should interview Gallo and ask him about his favourite early 80s Rap songs from the Prince Vince era. What was he listening to on this boombox in 1982 when he was drowning in baby-blue? Definitely Spoonie Gee, but who else and which songs specifically?

Juiceboxxx really missed a trick by not rhyming over Drowning In Brown one time like 'Clef on the Fugees joint. Speaking of 'boxxx, Like A Maniac is up there with Lifestyles Of The Rich And Infamous by Ice-T and Touring by the Ramones in my personal canon of Songs About Life On The Road. On the air guitar-ometer, Like A Maniac scores a Bill & Ted "EXCELLENT!"

He's the DJ, I'm The Blogger

DJ Megadon - Do It Mega
(From Do It Mega single; 2025)

Discovered via Crimedawgbylaw's best Milwaukeee Rap songs of summer 2025 list. Rappers seldom ever make tribute songs to DJs nowadays, so DJs have to get on the mic to feel themselves in song form instead. It's REAL HIP-HOP ™ in a way that's beyond comprehension to 90s Boom-Bap plebs, and charmingly wholesome in the exact same way that Hey DJ by World's Famous Supreme Team was.

Top 5 odes to their DJs by 80s Rappers IMHO:
LL Cool J - Go Cut Creator Go (1987)
Eric B. & Rakim - Eric B. Is President (1986)
Run-D.M.C - Jam-Master Jay (1984)
Marley Marl ft. MC Shan - Marley Marl Scratch (1985)
Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Jeff Waz On The Beat Box (1989)

Late pass!

Myaap ft. Vae Vanilla & 3200 Tre - Feeling Dis
(From The Bigger Picture album; 2024)

I've been checkin' for Myaap since HTS but I completely missed this song from the tail end of last year. A posse cut where everybody came with their own perspective and everybody got their points across. 2nd best non-2025 Rap song I've discovered this week so far. The first is Risky Business by Murs & Shock G/Humpty Hump. Never in a month of Black Sundays would my square arse have guessed that Shock G guested & produced a song on a Def Jux album.

(From The End of The Beginning album; 2003)

I'm sure most of youse lot were already familiar with Risky Business, but nobody ever told me about it! In fact, the only song I know from this particular Murs album is Transitionz Az A Ridah.

Berserker back!

AyooLii - Dumpin' Out A Zip
(From Dumpin' Out A Zip single; 2024)

I just had an epiphany and realised that the AyooLii songs I fuxwit are kinda like Milwaukeee's equivalent of peak 70th Street Carlos. The boi Carlos made Berserker-Bounce, while AyooLii makes Berserker-Bass. This particular song is Certified Fatter's first keeper since On My Daddy IMHO. No shotz @ AyooLii's backyard, but he is not a horticulturist of the Mouse On Tha Track caliber.

Completely unrelated: I had a dream where Jim Jones remade Kim Gordon's slam poetry fake-Trap song. Don't ask me why my dreams are concocting Jim & Kim fusions because I haven't listened to any Jones in months and I dislike the Gordon song. But in the unlikely event that Jim & Kim ever do collaborate then here's the perfect song title for them: My Friend Goonies.

Late pass!

AyooLii ft. Myaap - On My Daddy
(From On My Daddy single; 2023)

Last August ya boi mentioned that two of my favourite songs from Milwaukeee's internet-sexy wave of current Rap were Myaap's HTS and AyooLii's Smackin' Crackin'. Had no idea that the pair of them dropped an equally twisty-turny Milwaukeee Slap-Magnifico together.. until now. One for the clap, two for the bass, go on boy & girl just smack that place. Result: wham, bam, it's a monster jam.

Hat tip to Crimedawgbylaw's selections on No Bells best 2023 Milwaukeee Rap round-up. Where is teh luv for Zae Shakur's Donuts In A Benz tho?

Milwaukeee Brewer's Droop-E

Myaap - HTS
(From HTS single; 2023)

My problem with the current wave of Milwaukeee Rap is that most of the songs are first-take brainfarts from folks who are more #content creators than rappers. You say "teenage punk rock energy", I say "throwaways freestyles with very little replay value". Basically, it's music made by ADHD youngsters for ADHD youngsters innit? Plz believe ya host isn't morphing into Mart Adams tho because I occasionally come across a Milwaukeee song which sticks for me: AyooLii's Smackin' Crackin', Zae Shakur's Donuts In A Benz and Myaap's HTS. The latter is some twisty-turny Milwaukeee Slap-Magnifico that's full of hook like Abu Hamza's wife and underpinned by a bassline which hits like Lil' Nico on Lil B.
