Generic list post: 5 fives (Last Dayz)

Already tackled the subject of opening songs on rap albums, so in the interest of #balance, here's a different kind of generic list post about closing songs on rap albums.

Dedicatin' this post to the now-defunct Ego Trip website, a place which knew a thing or two about rap lists. Thank you for reposting my AZ and Grand Puba playlists, fuck you for reposting Wicked22's crappy mixes.

5 killer final songs on rap albums:
Slick Rick - Lick The Balls (1988)
Raekwon & Ghostface Killah - Heaven & Hell (1995)
Snoop Doggy Dogg ft. Lil' Malik - Pump Pump (1993)
The Jacka - Barney (More Crime) (2005)
Eric B. & Rakim - Kick Along (1992)

Woulda been killer final songs if not for an outro or bonus remix:
Camp Lo - Coolie High (1997)
Ice-T - Soul On Ice (1988)
Juvenile - Money On The Couch (1997)
MF DOOM ft. Kurious - ? (1999)
Z-Ro - Happy Feelingz (2004)

Shout out to these 5 bonus tracks, though, innit:
UGK - Wood Wheel (2001)
Black Sheep - The Choice Is Yours (Revisited) (1991)
Dr. Dre ft. Death Row - Bitches Ain't Shit (1992)
Sean "Diddy" Combs - Get Off (2006)
YG ft. Pushaz Ink - When I Was Gone (2014)

5 tracks which shoulda been killer final songs on rap albums:
AZ - Doe Or Die (1995)
Egyptian Lover - I Cry (Night After Night) (1984)
Lil' Boosie - Trouble Man (2005)
2Pac - Death Around The Corner (1995)
Mac Dre - So Hard (2001)

5 shitty final songs on killer rap albums:
N.W.A - Something 2 Dance 2 (1988)
De La Soul ft. Biz Markie - Stone Age (1993)
GZA ft. Killah Priest - B.I.B.L.E (1995)
Public Enemy - Party For Your Right To Fight (1988)
Cypress Hill - Born To Get Busy (1991)

I generally choose not to acknowledge the existence of North Star (Jewels) since I never heard it until the early noughties due to not owning a CD copy of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx until then. There's a reason why people sweat The Purple Tape, but nobody gives a shit about The Red CD: the former ends on peak-rap music with Heaven And Hell, the latter ends on a superfluous-arse throwaway.

Speaking of Soul On Ice, was Ice-T's Power outro the first time the term was used? don't remember seeing it before this but 1000's of albums had outros since

Good question. Bigger And Deffer had On The Ill Tip which was an outro in everything but name, but, yeah, I can't think of anything before Power with an official outro.

Also what about Digital Underground's "Good Thing We're Rappin'?"

Better than Jane, imho.

Why don't you like B.I.B.L.E.? Good call on ? and Happy Feelingz though.

Can't stand Killah Priest apart from his verse on 4th Chamber.

Why the hate for NWA's "something 2 dance to?" I loved it and still do.

Heavy D "A buncha niggas"
Big Pun "Parental Discretion"
Group Home "Tha Realness"
Brand Nubian "Punks jump up to get beat down"
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy "Waterpistol man"
Ice Cube "US"
K-Rino "Who killed realness?"
Menace Clan "Kill Whitey"
JJDOOM "Wash your hands"
MF DOOM "Cookies2
King Gedorah "The fine print"
Dark Sun Riders "Jewels of evil"
Doppelgangaz "Suppository"
Edan "Promised land"
Epic "Midnight run"
Josh Martinez "Deny"
Atmosphere "nothing but sunshine"
Blood of Abraham "niggas & Jews"
Mars Ill "The End"
MF Grimm "Book of Daniel"

Because it belongs on an Arabian Prince album rather than an N.W.A album.

Im v grateful for the local indie trend of putting the radio edits on the end, breaks the flow of the album but some of them singles are either impossible to find or i think never existed? Juvie/Hot Boys were top tier w proper radio versions if only for them saying "boy" on the We On Fire one - what kinda boy, a hot boy!

some albums dunno when to bow out gracefully, Ironman has like 3 final songs, every Rakim album, Capial Punishment would be classic if it ended at You Came Up + had the og samples cleared obv.

Fuck that Three Six ad outro shit esp on King Of Da Playaz Ball where its just a gammy version of a song they wouldnt put on the album its advertising. That album was sequenced arseways in general though

Kelvin Mack10zie said...

Not every Rakim album, since Kick Along is THE shit.

More killer closing cuts:
Hezekia "What kind of cool"
Digital Underground "cyberteeth tigers"
Blackalicious "Alphabet aerobics"
Dead at birth "50 ways to pimp slap your bitch"
Pigeon John "Growin old"
Dead Residents "Smash robot Vs Pacman ghost"
Master Ace "no regrets"
MegaRan "Grow up"
Streetsweeper Social Club "Nobody moves till we say go"

p.e - fight the power
2pac - against all odds

I want to ask Ice-T the outro question on twitter but I'm afraid he might insult me it's only entertaining when he does that to other people.

Didn't realize egotrip shut down. The book is classic for life but I left the site long ago after J-zone stopped writing for them

very disappointed to come here looking for some friday night hot jidenna takes only to learn about the end of ego trip

The fact that Wicked's mixes got posted on egotripland is a badge of honour that he will wear with pride until his last breath. Perhaps it was being run by unpaid interns towards the end when they figured out that there's naught money in blogging and moved on to greener pastures?

T-Nutty - Don't Floss! It's my favorite song to play before bed.

Some killer finales tracks:

8Ball & MJG - Lay It Down, or how to crunk up the heat at the end of the album
Onyx - Walk In New York, perfect ending
Mobb Deep - Party’s Over ft Big Noyd
Yukmouth - New Testament Outro, Yuk going hard over an epic Mike Dean beat
Ganksta Nip - Fuck You ft SPC “first I take your wrist and cut it, your blood blood blood, I love it love it love it”

Killer closing track if it wasnt for an outro:
Mac Mall - Crestside, melancholic reminiscing about the days of yore and the struggles of today over a Khayree beat

Nice icing-on-the-cake-bonus-tracks:
B-Legit - My Flow Of Cash
DJ Quik - Tanqueray

Close-calls but maybe not top 5:
Nas - It Ain’t Hard To Tell
Cold World Hustlers - Taste Da Hate ft Cougnut & Dre Dog
Devin The Dude - Just Tryin Ta Live ft Oddsquad
Street Military - Dead In A Year
Nine - 4 Chicken Wings And Rice
Tela - Piece Of Mind
Seagram - Peace To You

Dedication by Brand Nubian

Gotta mention Cormega here.

How The Realness ends with Fallen Soldiers Remix followed by Killaz Theme 2 (hidden track)... and how The Testement ends with Love is Love followed by Dead Man Walking 2 (which also feels like a hidden track).

All above New York street rap, perfected.

Kelvin Mack10zie said...

Killaz Theme 2 definitely gotta be up there as far as bonus tracks go.
