First good Rap song of 2021 IMHO. Alabama's hoodrat Angelica from Rugrats on a Trading Places life switcheroo. Seriously, if they don't spoof Eddie Murphy's G.O.A.T movie for the video to this one then it's a complete waste of the song's concept.
Uncle Murda on Noz's 100 best Rap songs of 2007 list eh? 2020 keeps throwing up all sorts of surprises. Top bloggin', but missing twelve Martorialist classics by twelve different artists who didn't make the list. So, here they are in an easily-digestible Audiomack playlist. No surprises here for regular TM™ readers, just twelve songs I'll never resist an opportunity to Stan for.
1. Camp Lo - Black Hollywood
2. Rock D The Legend ft. Big Boi - DDT
3. ByrdGang - Anniversary
4. Tha Camp - 1 Rubber
5. Grand Puba - Let's Go
6. Smooth B - I Want My Money Back
7. Jackie Chain - Waffle House Pimpin'
8. G-Side ft. Marcellus - Feel Like I Look
9. AZ - Doin' That (Memphis Sessions mix)
10. Mic Terror - Juke Them Hoes
11. Blaq Poet - Don't Give A Fucc
12. A-Wax - Gatez
Favourite find on Noz's list has gotta be Jhi-Ali's My Way. Very unique vibe - like if Bizzy Bone's little cousin from Alabama made his own version of Devin's Do What You Want To Do. Not only had I never heard the song before, I'd never realised Jhi-Ali was a bloke until the video later popped up in my YouTube recommendations. Cinderfella Jhi-Ali - 2020 truly is full of all sorts of surprises innit?
Jhi-Ali - My Way
(From My Way mixtape; 2007)
**EDIT** Just lookin' for a no-DJ MP3 of My Way and it turns out the song first dropped on this Slow Motion Soundz compilation in 2005. There's another solo Jhi-Ali solo track on there called On The Run that I'm curious to hear - anybody got it? It ain't on YouTube or Ali's Soundcloud.
Why didn't Flo Milli just include White Girl Mia on her debut EP rather than use a snippet of it for the intro? Song is peak hoodrat Angelica from Rugrats Brat-Rap in the Flo Milli canon. Really doe, twelve songs isn't an EP - it's an LP masquerading as an EP because major labels are terrified of classifying anything as an album in case it flops. If the label are all up in the game with the rules twisted then they shoulda just maximised this opportunity and included My Attitude, Eat It Up, and Iconic anyway for the full Flo Milli Shit™ experience.
Here at The Martorialist we're savouring Flo Milli's current run of singles because generic Auto-Tune f*ckery and cameos from hacks like Tyga and Gunna are surely inevitable. Highway to the danger zone from hereon in?
It's a game of two halves, Clive. They just don't make booty anthems like this anymore: songs that sound like the past, present and future at the SAME DAMN TIME! Back of the net, my son & shawty.
Who'd have ever thunk there'd be a Rapper called Trap Beckham tho? You'll never win anything with kidz unless you've got a different class of '92: Crunk Giggs, Atlanta Bass Scholes, Snap Butt, and the Futuristic Swag Neville Brothers.
Bonus beats: Flo Milli's new single is hardbody. Not so much death by stereo as death by stiletto.
Flo Milli - Like That Bitch
(From the internet; 2020)
"Because my attitude so nasty, I act just like my pappy
A lotta n*ggas want a piece of me like I'm some candy"
Flo Milli - My Attitude
(From YouTube; 2020)
I'm a child of 80s Beastie Boys so I'll always appreciate Brat-Rap in all its guises. What I'd also appreciate is a Flo Milli CD maxi-single with Not Friendly, Beef FloMix, and My Attitude on it.
PS: Not Friendly is the 'ardest song out right now.
"Girls be actin', I can tell that you're pretendin'
These hoes really jealous, that's the reason I'm not friendly
I hear these haters talkin' shit, it really don't offend me
'Cause in a crowd full of pussies I see that you blend in"
Flo Milli - Not Friendly
(From YouTube; 2020)
This latest single by the In The Party lass is very much my shit right now. Imagine a mainier sassier Gucci Gucci with steel drums and you've got Not Friendly in a nutshell.
Calvin Harris - Acceptable In The 80's
(From I Created Disco album; 2007)
Here at The Martorialist it pains us greatly that Jackie Chain went from rapping to farming without getting around to jackin' some noughties British pop-dance anthems. In fact, it's still Jackie-san's destiny to jack Calvin Harris' Acceptable In The 80's and transform it into an ode to Huntsville hedonism. No crazy visionz are even necessary because that shit practically writes itself:
"I got drugs for you if you were born in the 80's
I got Buds for you if you were born in the 80's
I got pills for you if you were born in the 80's
I'll throw bills for you if you were born in the 80's"
You see, in this world there's 2 types of people, my friend - doz that slept on Black Sheep's first LP and doz that wept when they heard OMB Peezy's debut LP. Fortunately ya host Captain Save-A-Rapper is here to dry your eyes like a laptop with this 7-song playlist of the EP that OMB Peezy's Loyalty Over Love was probably intended to be in 2017 before Peezy & his label decided to discard all the songs which built his reputation.
Actual factz: it's 2018 and the LP is an outdated drawn-out format which solely exists to give people on Twitter something to have Opinionz about every friday.
Much like the Beastie Boys' homeless m8 Johnny Ryall, I've got a Rockabilly past which nobody knows. But it's time to let the cat(man) outta the bag today because I've just realised that The Phantom's Love Me #actually dropped in 1960 rather than 1958, thus it shoulda been included in my best songs of the '60s list. If proto-Punk exists outside the heads of aged music critics then Love Me is far more deserving of the term than all those 1963 Garage-Rock bands who just sound like Dick Dale with a fuzz pedal. This song sounds like it was recorded by Elvis' psychopathic ghost from True Romance. Yous a fool for this one, Pat Boone:
The Phantom - Love Me
(From Love Me 7" single; 1960)
Memphis isn't where he's from, he invented Punk Rock but never met Malcolm McLaren. On the real, Yank teenagers in 1960 must have had their domes blown in the comforts of their suburban homes hearing some psychotic rockabilly shit like Love Me.
"Don't like the cards you was dealt, no givin' 'em back"
OMB Peezy - Venting Session
(From Loyalty Over Love album; 2018)
Grand mission statement to open OMB Peezy's debut album, eh? What a pity the LP takes a Sum 41 nosedive in quality after it. Granted, a couple of Loyalty Over Love's issues are personal gripes (he wants to be the new Kevin Gates; I want him to be the old Boosie with a soupcon of NorCal mobbishness), but the album's more general problems are genuine failings: gratuitous Auto-Tune smoothing out all Peezy's pan-regional rough edges, not enough trademark Sick Wid It slap in the production, and none of his best songs are present. How you gonna call your album Loyalty Over Love and then not even put the title track on there?
"Put a tag on your head like a cow"
OMB Peezy - Loyalty Over Love (Intro)
(From t'internet; 2017)
In hindsight, it was obvious Peezy's album would turn out be a bodge-job from the moment Lay Down and When I Was Down were remixed for their official release on 300 Entertainment. Overkill Peezy? More like awful A&Ring killed Peezy amirite.
"Look, you know whassup, it's finna go down
We both got a pistol, you better bust, this ain't no showdown
Don't even try it, I got somethin' to shut the show down
After I shot ya, whole block looked like a ghost town"
OMB Peezy & Cardo Got Wings - Go Down
(From Humble Beginnings EP; 2017)
The Overkill name stays the same, but Go Down is a whole different interpretation of Feel The Fire. This one redeems Peezy's Chinese Jordan YFN Lucci-isms elsewhere on his EP with Cardo - you're from Alabama not Atlanta, m8.
Ain't gon' lie, though - it bugs the Hell outta me that Peezy repeats lines in a row on both his verses here. Jimmy Spicer didn't rap for nearly 14 minutes on Adventures Of Super Rhyme so these lazy modern day rappers could play Jimmy Two Times on songs that are south of the 3 minute mark.
"Fell in love with the guwop
Startin' beefin' and fell in love with them glocks
Don't fuck with the cops, but they comin' if you want it or not
I'm just preppin' ya brain for the shit you say you wanna be 'bout"
OMB Peezy - Porch
(From YouTube; 2017)
Yer calender says 2017, but the Lay Down kid just dropped the best lost Bad Azz Mixtape, Vol. 2-era Boosie song innit. Let the record show that Peezy is now 5 for 5 since he started takin' rap seriously: Lay Down, Interracial Relations, When I was Down, Loyalty Over Love (Intro), and Porch here. Livin' the fast life of no duds, droppin' 5 songs in a row and all of 'em are good.
"Headfirst in the streets so you know there ain't no stoppin'
Gettin' money like a printer, lame n*ggas wanna copy"
OMB Peezy - Loyalty Over Love (Intro)
(From YouTube; 2017)
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Bay via Sick Wid It's first Alabama transplant signee. This is the first OMB Peezy song which sounds like it could feature Alabama's Duke of Datazz, and it'll work very nicely as the intro to whatever Peezy's Sick Wid It debut turns out to be. Ideally it'll be an EP in the vein of Nef The Pharaoh's own Sick Wid It debut because Rap needs less mixtapes and more Mailmans.
On the Keith Welch YouTube channel tip, Peezy needs to procure FBG's Blood Brothers for himself because that song's beat + chorus are wasted on such a forgettable group. Everybody eats, B, but some rappers are only worthy of a trip to the Harvester buffet innit?
Already learned a harsh lesson not to get too excited about Nef The Pharaoh Instagram snippets after Everything Big turned out to be a disappointment, but this song with Mannie Fresh sounds like it has potential, especially since OMB Peezy might be on there too.
"Havin' interracial relations with this motherf*ckin' white
You play me like I'm pussy, take your motherf*ckin' life
Am I a shooter who keep a Ruger? Bitch, you motherf*ckin' right
I keep a ruler like a tutor, I don't motherf*ckin' fight"
Once again it's on! How's the Lay Down kid's freestyle over a 1998 Soulja Slim classic sound fresher than damn-near any rap that's dropped in 2017? Interracial Relationsalmost has me wishing I'd never heard From What I Was Told because Peezy sounds to the manor born on that vintage No Limit factory-line beat. Oil and water don't mix like Durex and Catholics, but Peezy's gas on this one is so fluid it's makin' a mockery of everything ya host was taught in chemistry class.
