And it's been goin' on since before I was born
Though the undisputed origin has yet to be formed
It all used to boil down to the red and the blue
But that got f**ked up as the many led the few
Now there's bloods killin' bloods and crips killin' crips
That's n*ggas killin' n*ggas they played kickball with"
Murs - The Night Before
(From The End Of The Beginning album; 2003)
Murs' perfect song/video with Shock G & Humpty Hump inspired me to pick up his Def Jux debut CD. My 2nd favourite choon on there is another storytellin' track The Night Before, altho ain't shit funny about this tale. Murs uses each verse to whip up a whole world about L.A gang violence like Ice-T used to do, albeit from a different angle about 'bangers like triangle isosceles. Woulda been another perfect song had Murs not referred to THE REAL FOOTBALL™ as kickball. It's the exact same myopic 'Murican refusal to accept THE REAL FOOTBALL™ on its own terms which gave us such sporting calamities as the way Major League Soccer players used to take penalties in the 90s.

Explains Diana Ross's penalty kick in the opening ceremony of the 1994 World Cup.
Doomed tournament from that point forward except for Brazil and that Maradona goal.
Gtfo so whenever an American in a film said "kickball" they were talking about soccer* lololol?!?!?
I thought that meant like some kinda squash type game where you bounce a big sponge ball off a wall. ffs
*My ppl have our own sport called "football" that is I wanna say a lot older than the beautiful game, I think. A significant part of it involves putting your hands on the ball.
If your hands touch the ball, it's rugby. That's the rule!
So now you like Murs? Didn't you previously refer to him as a po-faced conscious rapper? (or words to that effect)
I liked some of his 90s stuff, but the stuff I liked was fairly humourless and earnest. Lif's Murs Iz My Manager was my awakening to him being a funny bastard.
But beyond coppin' the Bad Man 12" single after that I'd never delved into his 2000s music until recently.
Off the top of my head, no particular order:
Killa Keise - Gun Ride (That Sonny 6 Cher sample tho >>>>; "You can bring it back like a replay, you N1gg4s know I stay Fresh like the DJ")
J. Stalin - Early In The Morning ft Chipass
HD - Back (whole album produced by Fresh, really good one for both parties)
Ezale - Day One
The Jacka - The Jacka Blues
Young Gully - I Am
Yukmouth - Thuggin N Mobbin
Mozzy - Chew Something
Mitchy Slick - Put On A Show ft Murs & Planet Asia (Great tape too, "They know I'm a great american journalist, like Hemingway" !!!)
And of course Beeda Weeda - Bass Rock Babies which still hasn't left whichever device I'm using as a mp3 player ever since I first came upon it on your blog.
Runner's up:
Trae Tha Truth - Streetz Change (Excellent later-era deep cut for Trae, if we wanted to include a non-Cali rapper)
That HD song is my fave from that Tonite Show too 🙏
But I gotta disqualify Day Ones because that's one of the songs HawkBeatz did on Ezale's Tonite Show.
I feel like kickball may refer to “soccer baseball”… maybe?
Damn for some reason I always thought DJ Fresh did this one, I guess I should have been tipped by the fact that it didnt have his audio tag at the beginning.
Some french guys did
Some french guys did a zine last year with a really cool DJ Fresh interview, delving into how he started, influences, his processes, evolution etc... it's a few pages long and he's really genuine/candid about all of the topics, its a great read for anyone who understand french lol: https://painperdu.bigcartel.com/product/l-enfer-sur-terre-sparagmos
Not sure if they ever put out the original english version somewhere but they should.
Dare I even ask what "soccer baseball" is?
My French language skillz stretch to about 6 phrases.
