Generic list post: Detroit Rap City

Ain't gon' lie, ya host is hardly a Detroit Rap maven - the only Eminem album I've ever heard in full is The Slim Shady LP, nor have I ever heard any joints by Slum Village, Trick-Trick, Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, BandGang or Rocaiine that I've ever wanted to play twice. Ya host does, however, know that it's been warm in The D ever since Cybotron dropped Cosmic Cars in 1982, so here's a generic list post of my G.O.A.T Detroit jams.

Cybotron - Clear (1983)
Awesome Dre & The Hardcore Committee - Killer On Wax (1989)
Esham - No Singin' At My Funeral (1993)
Bo$$ - Deeper (1993)
Aux 88 - Electrotechno (1996)
Eminem - My Name Is (1998)
Royce Da 5'9 - I'm The King (1999)
D12 - Shit On You (2000)
Jay Dee - Fuck The Police (2001)
Obie Trice - Got Some Teeth (2003)
Frank-N-Dank - What Up (2006)
Black Milk ft. Royce Da 5'9 - Losing Out (2009)
Elzhi - Deep (2010)
Danny Brown - Lincoln Continental (2011)
Pablo Skywalkin - All Facts (2013)
Boldy James - Moochie (2013)
Big Sean - Paradise (O.G version) (2014)
Quelle Chris - Buddies (2017)
Doughboyz Cashout ft. B Ryan - This Is How We Move It (2017)
FMB DZ - Friday (2017)

This might be the first generic list post where I won't just politely sneer at any "OMG you need a song by ______" comments. Skool me on some Detroit choonz, lads!

Never trust anyone who prefers Boom to I'm The King.

Em's My Name Is has not ages well

Would suggest Phat Kat 'Don't Nobody Care About Us' and a few tracks off Black Milk's Popular Demand and Tronic albums

wait someone actually likes got some teeth? whoa

I'd add payroll, rocaine, sada baby & peezy, probably a few others I'm forgetting. And does Breed qualify as Detroit? He was from Flint and then moved to ATL in the mid 90s

My Name Is has aged far better than the more punchline-based tracks from that era like Role Model or the underground shit like Any Man.

Will peep the Phat Kat tune.

Payroll's in the list, I just listed This Is How We Move It as a Doughboyz track because that's basically what it is.

Re: Breed. O rly? Shit, already had to dump Dayton Family from the list after I realised they were from Flint from Detroit.

I have a huge soft spot for Got Some Teeth. Reminds me of the bars I used to drink in back in 2003.

Breed is def Flint's finest.

Payroll has some really good songs when he stays on that street Detroit tip. Those 2 albums with Cardo are both cool but kinda forgettable.

If you wanna check out some stuff, East Side Cheddaboyz - Makin Chedda On The Eastside and Street Lord'z - Platinum Rolee's Don't Tic Toc. These albums are sort of the blueprint for that Sick Wit It meets Cash Money type a rap that's Detroit trademark. Blade Icewood or Street Lordz Juan for solo artists.

90's Detroit had the Bryant roster as well, with his labels like Bryant Records and Roc-A-Fella (yes before the NY one). Detroit Most Wanted and AWOL had some good gangster-storytelling songs.

The city will also forever be in my heart for spawning Negative Approach and Cold As Life.

Huge fan of a lot of the singles Bandgang have put out over the last two years; specifically Lonnie Bands who typically raps like someone going through heroin withdrawls (if that's an appeal)

Taking sides: The Stooges Fun House LP vs. the Negative Approach 7"

Which is the apex of white ppl Detroit rock?

Also, I need to point out that Obie Trice's Got Some Teeth is categorically better than any Rocaine song.

Blade Icewood - Boy Would You

Hard choice on Fun House vs NA first 7”. I go with Fun House, reluctantly.

Definitely going with the NA 7" forever. Saw them a couple times live lately and they're still killing it, John Brannon still sound pissed-off like no other.

Detroit as a rock city also provided us with a lot of good records. Death, MC5, The Stooges, Easy Action, Laughing Hyenas, lots to choose from.

This is the type of stuff that Payroll is the best at doing IMO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP1Zfkuh3NQ

That one is cool.

I love the repurposed beatjacks as far as modern Detroit street rap goes meself.
