(From Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde album; 1992)
Psssst - keep it on the DL, but I'm pretty sure that Party Sparty has identified the Sleazy Trumpet Horns™ from The Pharcyde's 4 Better Or 4 worse. Click this link and check the choon at the 1:14 mark. It gotta be like French & Max, right?
Related: Hotbox just dropped a compilation of Rap songs which sample The J.B's. Talk about a stroke of serendipity because I'm off to see Fred Wesley & The New J.B's live tonight. Fred is 79 years old and he's still out on tour givin' up food for funk. Ya host went to see The Chats live this past friday so my musical Yin/Yang levels will be in full steezy alignment by tomorrow.
Nice. I'm off to see AZ + Doo Wop next Friday. Hoping it's a good one.
ReplyDeleteI'm going their Manchester show on the Sunday. I'm hoping Doo Wop being the DJ means AZ's stage show will be decent.
ReplyDeleteGoing to see the AZ tour on the 10 of June, hoping for a proper performance as well.
ReplyDeleteCaught Oddisee live with his band a couple weeks ago and it was really good.
Seen AZ & Doo Wop back in 2019 it was a great performance covered a pretty wide range of different songs.
ReplyDeleteA band??????? 🚫🚫🚫
ReplyDeleteThat Pharcyde album is so good, top 3 of '92 for me.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely up there.
ReplyDeleteCheers for the suuport, blud! 🤝
ReplyDeleteThinking of the very apex of Sleazy Trumpet Horns™ featured on a rap track and I'm coming up with Jeru's Da Bichez.
See normally I would agree with the no-live-band-in-my-rap-concert thing, I tend to be more of a “I’m the rapper he’s the deejay” myself, keep it simple, have a backer or a couple weed carriers and we’re good. The exception here is that the band is also part of his music on albums, so he’s one of the few where I don’t mind it, kinda like if I ever were to see DJ Quik on stage with Robert Funksta Bacon or even Andre Nickatina backed by the whole Fillmoe Coleman Band I guess.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Bizarre Ride and Chronic came out within weeks of each other blows my mind. 2 Top 10 LA albums of all time that close.
ReplyDeleteSpart, them particular Sleazy Trumpet Horns™ deserved better than Jeru's weird prudishness eh?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, the duality of L.A Rap in 1992.
Fred, that's a good point about Quik or Nickatina tbf.
how was Fred Wesley?
ReplyDeleteFans have gotta take a primo on moment of trurh skit hardline on this, imo. If by the grace of god somethings slipped by the suits the streets should not be talking.
ReplyDeleteThey lure you in w the shazams n whosampled good clean fun n before too long its strictly skynet approved tepid live band “reconstructions” on dsps
V good shout though, its gotta be it.
Donal, 😄 that's why we've gotta keep it on the DL innit.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, Fred Wesley was very good. Funky great-grampa vybz. It was absolutely rammed tho, which was annoying. By the grace of God I survived the night without anybody standing on or spilling their kicks on my shoes.
