Born To Audiomack: the best of Seiji Oda

"Any time I put on jeans, it's Japanese denim
They ain't even Japanese, I just happen to be in 'em"

Remember that Seiji Oda breh from a couple of posts ago? His music has proper popped out with the Snagglepuss knock and made me drop my croissant, so I've compiled a playlist of his best songs. Sometimes he sounds like a Japanese Kap G who took it to the Bay; sometimes he sounds like a Slap-Tranquilo P-Lo; sometimes he sounds like Valee if his main artistic inspiration was Mac Dre's Off The Rictor; and sometimes he sounds like an R&Based version of Japanese City-Pop. Somehow it all works and, more importantly, it all works together as this playlist proves. Shout out to the Cosmos, Seiji is beyond tho.

~~ The Best Of Seiji Oda ~~
1. Like This (2020)
2. Aero (2019)
3. Ridin' Round (2021)
4. How U Doin'? (2020)
5. Perfect Timing (2021)
6. Pomegranite (2021)
7. Tuesday! (2020)
8. Like Furl (acoustic) (2020)
9. Colors (2021)
10. Outtapocket (2021)
11. House Shoes (2021)
12. No Fillins (2021)
13. Gasbreakdip ft. Lil' Ricefield (2021)
14. Cyborg (2021)
15. Gochujang ft. Lil' Ricefield (2022)
16. Aero2 (2021)

Surprised myself by how much I like his sangy Auto-Tune songs. The reason they work for me is that they're very warm and fuzzy and are still distinctly Oakland. No Fillins, for instance, is dreamy R&B which interpolates Cupcake No Fillin by the Trunk Boiz. Told you that Seiji has unexpected depth like a Japanese bathtub.

  1. Recently listened to Japanese City Pop (80s) through a SoundCloud binge and I must say…. pretty good stuff.

  8. Did a Seiji video deep-dive (in a 🛀, as you would say!) after your initial post & was fillin’ the feel/variety too. & it’s not just that it’s danceable, it’s how excited he is to dance to his own sh*t! (+ is he single-handedly—like he’s trying to catch the bus 🚌—bringing sagging back?!) And didn’t realize Oda meant rice paddy, making his bro’s name even more apropos.

  9. Stuff I've found out since making this post:

He only wears clothes from thrift stores.

He broke his neck snowboarding and now has a steel cage in his neck, which explains all his "metal in my neck turned me into a cyborg" lines.

I've added the song Cyborg to the playlist.

  10. I'm pleased to report that this playlist is perfect car music while enjoying the last dying moments of sunlight on a cold februari evening. I particularly enjoyed Colors, Like Furl, Gochujang, Gasbreakdip and most of all, No Fillins. That said, I'm also enjoying the charms of Trapanese, which was my cheat addition to the playlist.

  11. Trapanese is great, I didn't include it because it's Ricefield's song and Seiji hadn't developed the Snagglepuss vocal stylings at that point.

They have a few good tracks as a duo. Shout out to the Anime Shawty remix.

  12. You’re right, Seiji sounded a bit like DaBoii light on Trapanese. Definitely not like his later material.

    Will peep that track, thanks.

  19. damn that is surprising and excellent news in the year 2022... ok if u had to pick one?

  20. Technically, he only has one album lofi // HYPHY. His other releases are EPs like Blue+ and Wading In Shallow Warer; 3 or 2 track things or loosies.

You gotta dig through 'em yourself now and see what floats your boat,

  21. 🙏🏻😌 with seiji it is clearly all about floating, looking forward to it and thank you for setting me upon this path
