(From He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper album; 1988/YouTube; 2018)
Damn, nobody told me that the banned A Nightmare On My Street video finally turned up online in 2018. Banned because New Line Cinema had it pulled from circulation in 1988 to use The Fat Boys' Are You Ready For Freddy? as a promotional tie-in for the 4th A Nightmare on Elm Street movie instead. Lord knows why because the Fat Boys song was shite, and there couldn't have been any tricky image rights issues to negotiate when the Freddy of Jeff & Will's Street looked nowt like the Freddy of Elm Street. One, two,
Let's be honest here, this video resurfacing and Jimmy Wopo's two Elm Street songs were the only notable things Freddy's Franchise™ produced last decade.
Rap music - three, New Line Cinema - nil.
This video is seriously mad lol.
ReplyDeleteThat Never Sleep Again doc released in 2010 was incredible and it’s well worth checking out if you haven’t seen it yet.
ReplyDeleteI know you’d never do it but a Fresh Prince essentials list would be great. I know people say he’s corny but his music was very dope to me
ReplyDeleteWill investigate, Spart.
ReplyDeleteJmil, that's not a bad idea actually.
WOOOOW! I have never seen this or heard of the video's existence
ReplyDeleteFUN FACT: this was the first rap song I ever heard. One of my friend's older sisters had the cassette. And in the states, there was NOTHING bigger than Freddie Kruger in 1988. I was like 6-7 years old, so it was actually kinda scary at the time.
This was the song / album that got me hooked on rap music. It was a HUGE song despite never being released as a single or video. Got played at Halloween parties for years (even still now). I can only imagine how massive this would've been had the video dropped. Another million sold at least.
New Line Cinema TRULY bet on the wrong horse. Disorderlies had them fucked up.
Thanks for posting
It actually did come out as the album's third single, but the video getting pulled obviously hurt it.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a great video. Looks like they spent a decent chunk on the budget too by 1988 standards 😂
