(From Step Up Front single; 1988)
Why'd the only decent quality upload of the Step Up Front video get deleted from YouTube so all we're left with is this unwatchable/unlistenable fuzzfest? Whoever has the decent quality video rip needs to step up front and upload that shit so we can all inspect Positive K & his crew's garms again whenever we're reminding ourselves that it woz Grand Puba Maxwell not Dr. Dre or Metro Boomin'/Southside who first freaked the Ironside theme.
The 3 Heineken Technique mix of Step Up Front featuring King Of Chill wasn't quite the first great Rap remix (that'd be BDP's Remix For P Is Free IMHO), but it might be the first great Rap remix to feature all new lyrics and to introduce a guest Rapper. In that sense, it woz Possy Pos' not his old foe Puffy who Invented The Remix™.
Let's talk notable 80's remixes then, lads. Rules are no truncated 7" versions of early Rap 12"s (they're radio edits rather than remixes), and no C.J. Mackintosh club mixes (they're all shite.) Extended mixes in the Egyptian Lover stylee are, however, welcome.
The album mix of BDK's "Raw" is better than the 12" version
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. Got way more snap to it.
ReplyDeleteConversely on the Cold Chillin' tip, there's the annoying single/video version of Biz's Vapors. O.G album version FTW in that instance.
Coldcut remix of "Paid In Full" too,
ReplyDeleteAKA the only good Eric B. & Rakim remix.
ReplyDeleteFuk the video mix of In The Ghetto and anybody that love it.
Steady B - Serious (BDP remix)
ReplyDeleteJungle Brothers - Because I Got It Like That (Ultimatum remix)
DU - Packet Man (45 King remix)
I Know You Got Soul (Double Trouble remix)
BDP remix of Serious is definitely a key 80's remix 👍
ReplyDeleteSpecial Ed - Think About It (Howie's Slow Flow Remix)
ReplyDeleteNot heard that before. Like it more than the original.
ReplyDeleteYou Must Learn (Live from Caucus Mountain Remix) - BDP
ReplyDeletealso this is early 1990 but has '89 in the title so. . .Gutfest '89 the extended cassette version
'89, duuuude!
ReplyDeleteDe La Soul Buddy Native Tongue mix
ReplyDeleteBDP - Still #1 Numero Uno remix
The video mix of In The Ghetto would be better than the og imo, replayed sample n all, if it wasnt for his brother or whoever fucking up the hook
No pro-video mix of In The Ghetto sentiments will be tolerated here!
ReplyDeleteAn 80's video/radio mix which is better than the original is Stezo's Freak The Funk.
Paul C's various extended / dub versions on all the Super Lover Cee and Rudd 12"s merit a mention.
ReplyDeleteThe Video mix of PHD I'm Flippin is better than the main / Lp mixes.
Good call on PHD.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad nobody's nominated the overrated Blue Mix of Strong Island.
