Generic list post: Biting Etto edition

EttelThun just dropped a ten essential B-sides of the '80s post, ya boy Evil Ed O.G right chea couldn't resist gettin' in on the act too, if only to remind everyone that the beatbox version of Treat Her Like A Prostitute from the Teenage Love 12" is vastly superior to the Great Adventures Of.. LP version. 10 Martorialist-approved 12" exclusive B Side-only cuts of the '80s which aren't in EttelThun's list:

Doug E. Fresh & MC Ricky D - La Di Da Di (1985)
Slick Rick - Treat Her Like A Prostitute (Movie Version) (1988)
Spoonie Gee - Love Rap (1980)

Reasons why I love YouTube # 59

Because two of my absolute favourite songs of the year have finally been blessed with videos so maybe they might blow up to the extent that I could hear them at a Westwood party in Manchester or catch them on Channel AKA at 3:AM during a bout of insomnia? Either would do, tbh.

5th Ward Weebie - Let Me Find Out Part 1
(From YouTube; 2014)

K Camp - Oh No
(From YouTube; 2014)

As much as I want both these songs to blow up, Plz God, do NOT let The Canadian remix either of them. Actually that should read The Canadians because the only thing worse than a Drake remix of Oh No would be a Ryan Hemsworth ersatz-trip hop remix of Let Me Find Out Part 1.

Slim Thug had "bitches on the east coast, bitches on the west"

Did he have any southern belles in his little black book too? Find out on one of my favourite Swishahouse deep cuts:

Slim Thug, PJ & Paul Wall - Live From The Lonestar
(From ????/Paul Wall's Sittin' Sidewayz compilation; 2006)

Thought I should probably upload this since the only place you can find it on the general internet in 2014 is on Grooveshark. First heard this one on DJ Eleven's amazing Houston Rocks It mix CD back in 2005 and then found the full song on some unofficial Paul Wall compilation a year later. Anyone know what CD it's originally from?

God bless America

Max B is in prison forever for a crime he wasn't even present at, while the 3 rapists from Das Racist are free to roam Brooklyn loft parties looking for barely-conscious drunken girls to molest. Migos are more popular than Travis Porter and Rich Kidz despite the fact they've only ever made 3 good songs. Here's a new good Rich Kidz song from their latest EP which dropped yesterday:

"Smokin' and leanin' and shit
She like my demeanour and shit"

Rich Kidz - Wanted
(From Y.A.R.S EP; 2014)

Truth be told, this latest EP isn't soundin' like their best release, but there are 2 tracks that are essential to your Rich Kidz stash: All Around The World is thee jam because it's essentially Sunrise (Interlude) beefed up into a full song, and Wanted is mah shit because it signifies a progression in the Rich Kidz sound and makes me temporarily forget that I'm secretly counting down the days until Skooly starts rolling dolo like Ike Love.

Generic list post: 22 knockin' rap songs which sample or interpolate 80s pop classics

Barely-veiled "Why is a shitty UK Hip-House remix of Kid 'N' Play's 2 Hype the only rap song that's ever sampled Blancmange's Living On The Ceiling?" post with a self-explanatory premise.

M.O.P ft. Tef & Jay-Z - 4 Alarm Blaze (1998)
Foxy Brown - Cruel Summer (2003)
Z-Ro ft. Tanya Herron - Continue To Roll (2006)
The Diplomats - Built This City (2003)
Cam'Ron - Pass The Dutchie (2009)
Jim Jones & Max B - Beverly Hills Cop (2008)
French Montana & Max B ft. Dame Grease - Goon Muzik (We Run NY) (2008)
Max B - Lonely (2010)
A-Wax - Be Together (2004)
AP.9 ft. The Jacka - Reflections (2009)
Mann ft. 50 Cent - Buzzin' remix (2010)

Lil' Kim - Right Now (2000)
TRU - I Got Candy (1997)
Kane & Abel ft. Master P - Time After Time (1998)
Trina - Da Baddest Bitch (2000)
Lil' Wayne ft. Boo & Mack Maine - I Like It (2007)
YG - She A Model (2009)
Original Concept - Pump That Bass (1986)
Jermaine Dupri ft. Nas & Monica - I've Got To Have It (2000)
A.Z. of MobStyle - What's Going On, Black? (1991)

Harold Bishop Lamont

Remember that Hit Boy beat with the tuba which Nicki Minaj dissed Lil' Kim about selling her album on Paypal over? It now has a new home:

Rich Boy ft. Game - Ridin' Thru My City
(From t'internet; 2014)

Nas was a gun (™ Thun), Rich Boy is a bus - you sit around waiting for him to turn up for ages and then he pops up twice like WAT. Hit Boy productions which resist the urge to go all Jon Brion-meets-Michael Bay in their final third are the best kind of Hit Boy productions; also see: Kiss It by DEV & Sage The Gemini, which will forever ever be a better song than N*ggas In Paris and not just because DEV & Sage are better rappers than the Camel & KanYe at this point.

Another mystery solved

Thanx to Jeff for comin' through with the info on the mystery Right Now song. Can't even front, I'm actually feelin' this shit now I've heard it in full because it's kinda like a Yo Gotti song as performed by one of Hot Stylz:

"Uh, I feel like Superman right naw
Up-up-and-away with your hoe, change your plans right naw
In the club diddy boppin', watch me do my dance right naw
Said she wanna make a movie, I'ma call Stan right naw"

Looni - Right Now
(From the internet; 2014)

Am I trippin' or is that really a Mark Rogowski reference in the second verse when dude says "the house smell like a dead body right naw/I'm lookin' out for Gator & Janoski right naw"?

There's also a version of this shit on YouTube where Looni performs it acapella while beating on his chest. Not so much "half man, half amazing" as half Matthew McConaughey in The Wolf Of Wall Street, half Alpoko Don:

Oh, so that's why the Bay hates DJ Mustard so much

Catchin' up on saturday night's Westwood show during lunch today and the Big Dawg's just played Adrian Marcel's 2 AM, the Ma$e & Eric Bellinger joint Nic-Nac did, 99 Percent's Yike In It, and a grip of HBK singles including College Drop, Panoramic and Only That Real during the "nuthin' but Mustard heat, kid!" portion of his set. Sick burn, bruv!

Anyhoo, at 1:10:45 on the show Westwood plays a song based around the phrase "Right Naw" that I've never heard before and isn't showing up on Shazam or on any Google searches for its lyrics. It's not Right Now by August Alsina & 2 Chainz or its namesakes by Skooly & Doe B or Trap Boyz & Young Buck; nor is it Rite Nah by Tradenark Da Skydiver or its namesakes by Kennfolk Mossburg or J-Real. Don't even particularly like the song, I just wanna know who it's by now. Make like Z-Ro and Help Me Please!

It's a ménage à trois, you can meet us at the bar

It's taken a week, but Jackie Chain's elusive, possibly unofficial new EP has now made its way to Spotify and Amazon. Favourite cut on this thing has gotta be Party Girls which doubles as a sequel to Molly and Jackie's 8th potential-hit single that will never blow up because AmeriKKKa still views all AZN males through the prism of Mickey Rooney in Breakfast At Tiffany's.

"Mary Jane, that's my boo
So is Keyshia, Molly too"

Jackie Chain - Party Girls
(From I Love Lean EP; 2014)

Was gonna describe Party Girls as what RiFF RaFF probably thinks Neon Icon sounds like in his most coke-addled of wet dreams, but does that really do the song justice? When in doubt, feed that shit into the trusty sound-to-image converter and see what it spits out. This is Party Girls:

That's How It Go posts come in twos like a pair of sneakers

That's How It Go by Yowda & YG now has a video! Would love some industry bod to put a bit of money behind this so it can bubble when RJ's Ride Wit' Me finally pops:

"I got homies on the block, homies in the penn'
I give 'em they respect, 'cause I ain't never been
Had Ciroc with the cran', bitches come with the bands
The only pass I need is my passport to Japan"

Yowda ft. YG - That's How It Go
(From That's How It Go single; 2014)

If YG really is gettin' "30 racks for a show" nowadays, he can afford to upgrade from that t-shirt he's wearing in this video and cop one of those red bandana-print Visvim lhamos because he'd definitely look way less ridiculous wearing one than KanYe did. Oi, Keenon - don't let John fucking Mayer pip you to the post on this one, bruv!

A Davy DMX productions compilation 4 u

Remember when The Daily Mail ran a picture of D.M.C. in a story about DMX getting busted for possessing weed? Definitely a top 5 most unfortunate Daily Mail faux pas right there, but had they accidentally posted a pic of Davy DMX instead it would have been the greatest moment in the paper's fabled history. Why? Because Davy is one of the great unsung producer/songwriters of the pre-Marley Marl/Rick Rubin era of recorded rap and any publicity would have been good publicity at this point for a producer who should rightfully be lauded as the missing link between Pumpkin and Trevor Horn.

Alongside his Orange Krush bandmate Larry Smith, Davy is best known for being the man behind the music on Run D.M.C.'s debut LP and co-producing King Of Rock, but dude's discography is deep like Puffy's motivational Tweets: he played on Kurtis Blow's The Breaks and ghost-produced most of the songs Kurtis later took credit for like If I Ruled The World; he wrote, played on and co-produced Jimmy Spicer's Money (Dollar Bill Y'All which got famously beatjacked 20-something years later for Maino's Hi Hater; His spell at Fever Records in 1983 resulted in Love Bug Starski's You've Gotta Believe/Starski Live At The Disco Fever 12", Sweet G's Games People Play and it's superior female answer-version Gigolette's Games Females Play; The Fearless Four enlisted his services for a couple of songs for their debut 12" on Elektra in 1983, the B side of which embellished a certain De La Soul classic; he notched up at production credits at Tuff City Records with Spoonie Gee's singles The Big Beat and Street Girl and his own singles One For The Treble and The DMX Will Rock; he wove his magic on various songs for the Fat Boys including the best track they ever made Jail House Rap, which got jacked twice in 2011 by DB Tha General and Mysonne; Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde bore the fruits of his labour both officially and unofficially as he was behind the 80% of their The Champagne Of Rap LP which Andre Harrell & Alonzo Brown took credit for; he dropped an underrated LP on Def Jam in 1987 when his trademark sound was on the verge of becoming old hat; and he switched his whole style when he got hired to co-produce Run D.M.C's Tougher Than Leather LP in 1988 resulting in one of most incredible flips of Bob James' Nautilus sample on Beats To The Rhyme.

This compilation takes in 12 of my favourite Davy DMX productions from his peak of 1982 - 1985, although there's nothing from Run D.M.C because you should know that LP from front-back & side-to-side already, and nothing from King Of Rock because I'm not entirely sure what he was or wasn't involved with on that album. A handful of the tracks are 7" edits which work better in their truncated forms than they do at their 12" running times, but the rest are included at their original full-length versions. Can you dig the full 7 minute Money (Dollar Bill Y'All)? Find out below:

The Martorialist presents.. Davy DMX's greatest Productions

Orange Krush - Action (1982)
Jimmy Spicer - Money (Dollar Bill Y'All) (1983)
Davy DMX - One For The Treble (1984)
Davy DMX - The DMX Will Rock (1985)
Love Bug Starski - You've Gotta Believe (1983)
Gigolette - Games Females Play (1983)
Spoonie Gee - The Big Beat (1983)
Spoonie Gee - Street Girl (1985)
Fat Boys - Jail House Rap (1984)
The Fearless Four - F-4000 (1983)
Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde - Fast Life (1984)
Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde - Yellow Panties (1985)

Honourable mention goes to Kurtis Blow's Hello Baby, a song I personally love but schmaltzy slow jams where Kurtis croons about his chirpsing techniques for over 6 minutes probably aren't everybody's cup of tea.

Brief thoughts on DJ Mustard's 10 Summers album

I love DJ Mustard production too, guys, but it's okay to admit that 10 Summers is a near-total washout and the complete antithesis of a family-affair project like Ketchup: a predictable melange of 40% sleep-rapped verses from the usual industry mooches 4 hire over 3.5/5 beats, 40% kinda well-rapped verses by weed carriers over 2.5/5 beats, and 20% interludes that are better than most of the songs; in a nutshell: all the worst bits of a DJ Khaled compilation and a typical producer album in one.

Giuseppe with 2 Chainz, Yo Gotti & Jeezy features the best beat on 10 Summers by a Young Thug's leg mile, alas I just don't possess the willpower to sit through a rap song where 3 dudes in their late 30s rap about wearing repulsive Eurotrash high-tops which look like what would happen if the British orthopedic brand Hotter did a goth-ninja range for Ukrainian club bros with bad arches.

Keep walking, folks - there's nowt to see here except the Mustard analogue to Dr Dre Presents... The Aftermath.

Ayo Jackie Chain

Put that new retail EP of yours up on Amazon or GooglePlay for doz of us who don't use fucking iTunes, plz.

The Pimpin' Mane remix is still an underrated 2014 favourite over hea.

Reasons why I love YouTube # 58

Because it affords us all the opportunity to watch Love Bug Starski strutting his stuff way through You've Gotta Believe onstage at The Roxy in footage shot for the NYC Hot Tracks TV show. Best known for being the song that's been interpolated by Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch and The Smiths (I thought Morrissey was a racist rockist?), You've Gotta Believe is a 1983 Davy DMX & Larry Smith production which sounds like a token rap song recorded for the Beverly Hills Cop OST by Harold Faltermeyer and the cast from Grange Hill's Just Say No:

Bonus TV beats for the UK famalam, here's Starski doing his biggest hit Amityville (The House on the Hill) on Solid Soul on Channel 4 in 1986 whilst wearing a blue lamé padded-shoulder jacket that looks like it was ganked from Joan Collins' wardrobe department on Dynasty. Like The Show, Amityville didn't get blessed with any visuals even though it was a top 20 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, so this clip is as close as we'll ever get to an official video:

Related old school note: Ettelthun finally interviewed Spoonie Gee!

A glaring omission from David Drake's 50 best Ca$h Money songs list

Feels churlish to complain about a list which teaches the chil'ren about Lil' Slim's Bounce Slide Ride, Magnolia Shorty's Monkey On The Dick, and Juvenile's Solja Rag, especially since Drake didn't even get final say on the selection, but is any best Ca$h Money Records songs list really complete without Connected For Life?

Mack 10 ft. Ice Cube, WC & Butch Cassidy - Connected For Life

The last classic rap song to feature a member of N.W.A? Check!
Ageing multimillionaire gangsta-rap posse cut done right? Check!
Mannie Fresh doing post-2001 west coast production better than Dr Dre? Check!
Integral part of Baby & Slim diversifying the CMR brand after Juve & B.G. left? Check!

A catch-up compilation of sorts 4 u

Here's a RAR file of some non-2014 rap songs ya boy Robbie Cabbage Savage has finally caught up with this year that you can now catch-up on en masse. Most of these songs have appeared on this site in some shape or form over the past 7 months and 6 days, but there's a few surprises included as well including an exclusive Shop Shutters slumpah that FrankieThaLuckyDog hooked me up with in exchange for me sending DJ B-Real a Facebook message asking him to unblock Frankie. I grab my thang and blast for Frankie, he grab his shit and blast for me, if we gets mixed up in some mess we calls it catastrophe, a blogger can't get mad at Frankie if he don't get mad at me, now we passin' MP3s like we used to pass the weed!

The Martorialist presents A Catch-Up Compilation 4 U

1. Legit Ballaz - Tattoo (2002)

Bitch, I'm on a roll like 7-Eleven

Here's a new Lil' Debbie song where she hops off the good ship Ratchet of $lot Machine and Work The Middle to try some contemporary Bay Area rap in the vein of D-Lo or DB Tha General, which is the type of music she should have been making all along since 2012 as opposed to RiFF RaFF fanboy Tumblr-bait like Brain Freeze and Squirt. Ol' girl has been killin' shit the past couple of months but U.E.O.N.O it because you're still out chea RiFF RaFF-plaining and pretending like his rap jig wasn't up the moment Lil' Momma I'm Sorry turned out to be a TKO Capone song:

"Mind on my money 'til I cash that shit
Took a couple l's, got the last laugh, bitch!"

Lil' Debbie - I Do My Thang
(From California Sweetheart 2 EP; 2014)

Since Debbie is also "half Italian if that help out any" this makes her the best (off-)white rapper since A-Wax.

Martorial elegance # 77

"'Cause I haven't felt this muhfuckin' good in a minute
Cut my dreads off and the bullshit went with it"

Mouse On Tha Track - Liberation (The Cut)
(From Air Time mixtape; 2014)

True story, the Martorialist crew were settling down to type out a thinkpiece explaining why Mouse's song about cutting his dreads off is the most triumphant statement about purging one's own personal demons in the 35 year history of recorded rap music before we accidentally ran the MP3 through our sound-to-image converter and it spluttered this out as its closest corresponding match to prove that a picture really is worth more than 1200 words:

"I'm a new me, a new me, a new me, but it's the true me!"

Sunday, 3 August 2014

King Kut (no Word Of Mouth ft. DJ Cheese)

Feel obliged to point out that Freeze Tag Booty guy's other 2013 local hit which is now quietly making its way to radio in 2014 is another stonker of a tune if you disregard the remix featuring Tits Ross entirely. This original pre-MMG solo version of Lum Lum is the sort of hard-bitten, strip club-friendly Miami street rap that was spunked from the same loins as Dank and Shut Up, and lord knows Florida could do with more rap music which bears the DNA of JT Money and Trick Daddy right now:

"My n*ggas gon' shoot, your n*ggas gon' run
My hoes gon' fight, your hoes get jumped
Lum lum lum lum....LUM
Lum lum lum lum....LUM"

K Kutta - Lum Lum
(From Lum Lum single; 2013)

Saturday, 2 August 2014

Rap Game Michael Alig

"I don't think I'ma always take one route
Have a conscience but I hate to see it come out
Had a bomb bitch 'til she saw the funds run out
Did a couple things can't be undone now
Fuck it, I'ma rider
Suckas say I'm hidin'
Let me catch a motherfucker slippin', he ain't slidin'
Hope you pay attention and it's sinkin' in your noggin'
You don't want me ridin' 'round thinkin' it's a problem
You don't want me ridin' 'round thinkin' it's an issue
We gonna be around still to see if people miss you
Shit, we gonna be around still to hear the people dis you"

A-Wax - Mozart
(From Pullin' Strings album; 2014)

Wherein A-Wax's justifies the songs sub-Pusha T simile of Mozart in its first 25 seconds by rhyming "movin' them ki's, no pianist/opp sat his drink down, go pee in this".

What songs are all y'all A-Wax experts feelin' on this album then?

The annual Grand Puba post

Thought the well of Grand Puba rarities had run dry until I recently came across Can U Dig It, which is the original unreleased version of Amazing with a certain vocal sample that Puba's team presumably couldn't afford to clear on whatever budget Elektra Records had allocated them in 1994.

Not tryna besmirch Positive K's character here by suggesting that he nicked the DAT of Can U Dig It, but I can't think of any other logical reasons why an unreleased 2000-era Grand Puba song produced by Minnesota from Money Boss Players would eventually see the light of day on a 1999 EP of Posi Pos deep cuts.

Grand Puba - Can U Dig It?
(2000 album recording sessions; 1994/Positive K - E & J EP; 1999)

For all y'all fellow Puba-philes keepin' tally, this is now the third track to feature his "I got mad style, wicked and wild/momma's second child, throwin' rappers to the pile etc etc" verse. Like that Akinyele song with the "would Erykah Badu fuck them two righteous dudes from the Brand Nubian crew and include Grand Pu'?" line suggested, all good things should come in threes.
