Growin' through shit, that's the part I like"
Consequence - Blood Stain
(From Blood Stain single; 2022)
The return of Rap's official G.O.A.T weed carrier (though he was none too pleased to accept the title.) And over a KanYe Pest beat which is hard enough to rattle Consequence's proto-Rylan dentures. Surprisingly good, but maybe I shouldn't be so surprised since Cons rapping over KanYe production has been a G.O.O.D Combination™ since their pre-College Dropout back-and-forths like The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and Take It As A Loss. Plus, can't forget the ultimate solo ConYe track which doubles as one of the best The 'Hood Done Took Me Under (Its Wing) songs of the 2000s.
(From Don't Quit Your Day Job album; 2007)
**EDIT** added the Blood Stain video because it features Consequence practicing blackbelt-level Rap Hands on a Martian beach. Makes sense he has a such a strong Rap-Hands game because the first video he ever appeared in was the Rap-Hands equivalent of Citizen Kane.
Was not expecting Kanye to come with a beat like that
ReplyDeleteThat Consequence interview is lolz
Rappers always get salty about being called weed carriers or sidekicks but it's just natural pecking order innit.
ReplyDeleteAlways though Cons was more talented than he’s given credit for
ReplyDeleteFeel This Way with John Legend is like a G.O.O.D Music I Need A Girl Part 2. Peak late 2000s Rap & Bullshit jam imho.
ReplyDelete"Because once she found out I had chicks on my roster her lip puffed up like she's allergic to lobster"
who are the best weed carriers of all time? consequence, gunplay, curren$y, oj da juiceman and... all of state property...?
ReplyDeleteI suppose Max B sorta qualifies as a weed carrier, although he far transcended his former boss and the whole of Dipset including Cam'Ron imho.
ReplyDeleteOther faves: B-Legit and Big Noyd. Then there's henchmen sidekicks like Fam-Lay, A-Mafia and Waka Flocka Flame.
Legit’s the big homie—more contemporary than carrier. Now D-Shot on the other hand, might be the defn of. (“He brought us back Chablis. Chablis?”)

ahhhh b-legit i was thinking "whoever's on captain save a hoe" but spaced on his name!!!
ReplyDeletei agree about max b, considering him seemed liked a slippery slope tho to like roc marciano and then u realize a lot of rappers were once weed carriers for other rappers and idk where that line is hahah
It's a very slippery slope indeed because even Jay-Z began his career as a weed carrier.
ReplyDeleteI'd define B-Legit as more of a henchman than a big homie because he's younger than E-40. Should weed carriers always be younger than their bosses? That might be a helpful rule.
if weed carriers are always younger what is difference between a weed carrier and protegé?
ReplyDeleteconsequence is 1 year younger than kanye lmao, feel like he is truly the MOST weed carrier because he was also a weed carrier for ATCQ AND because he never really took off as a solo artist
True, there's so many #levelz to being a Rap sidekick it gets difficult to work out the subtle differences between weed carriers, henchmen, protégés, ghostwriters who Rap, family members etc.
ReplyDeleteBig fan of Rock N Roll from Consequence's ATCQ carrying era.
I remember Rock n Roll from the New York State Of Rhyme comp.
ReplyDeleteThat was where I first heard it too.
ReplyDeleteCon has chompers like Rylan Clark.
ReplyDeleteMajority of Busta's Flip Mode Squad were treated like weed carriers, imo. Till some clued up and left eventually.
Spliff Star is the ultimate example of another type of weed carrier: the hypeman/video sidekick.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteBig Noyd, c-murder, Teflon + every member of the gang Starr foundation that's not jeru definitely henchmen hall of fame. Bonus points if you do the weed owners diss dirty work for them like little Bruce or state property.
Anyone that does a lot of hook work is a weed donkey lifer regardless how successful they are later - kokane, Nate Dogg, stressmatic, max b
Stezo, coolio n french Montana might be the goat overachiever weed carriers
Also this is definitely a dead controversial opinion at this stage but im one of the ppl who rly likes beats rhymes n life. A lot of its to do with consequences chemistry with q tip, since him n phife from the spunds of things recorded in seperate studios months apart each time
ReplyDeleteV funny when phife would complain about guns in rap music on the same song they would rap about g7ns though
A REAL dead controversial opinion would be that Consequence's Don't Quit Your Day Job is a better album than Tribe's comeback LP. Controversial but factual.
ReplyDeleteGood point about Stezo. He's another type of weed carrier: the back-up dancer.
Never heard that Tribe comeback album cause I honestly expected to be disappointed but Cons album was actually pretty good from what I remember I need to revisit it.
Deleteman i find the hype around that comeback tribe record so baffling... thought "the killing" with kanye west cool and the rest just put str8 2 sleep
ReplyDeletestill hurt over the week night in high school i stayed up past midnight to download the Q-Tip & Busta Rhymes "mixtape" that "thank you" was supposedly the single off of and then it was just a compilation of a bunch of their already released collaborations giuhejwnrtksefgsnk
😄 That was the ultimate Livemixtapes okie doke.
ReplyDeleteEverytime the weed carrier convo comes up I’m always thinking of Lil Wayne’s loyal sidekick Gudda Gudda. Never had a career on his own, will forever be remembered as that guy on some LW songs.
ReplyDeleteB-Legit def not a weed carrier, not only because The Hemp Museum is a personal classic at home, but I remember reading ITVs with Boots Riley and Danny Brown explaining how big he was in the Midwest, like dudes would go to the record store asking specifically for his latest release.
But yeah being a WC is a grey zone, usually it’s like the dudes might be competent on the mic but with not enough talent to actually make it on their own without always being in the shadow of whoever they’re carrying the weed for. Some might have a bit more spotlight than others at some point, (Keith Murray is another good one), but they’ll never be bigger than that one song or two.
I'm stuck in 2005, but I always wanted a proper Trife/Ghostface album where they go back and forth on every track (I liked Put It On The Line, but that didn't have a lot of interaction between them)
ReplyDeleteOh shit it's Admiral.
ReplyDeleteWeed carriers can definitely make music which is better than their bosses/classic shit tho. Which is one of the reasons why I don't think there's anything wrong with being a weed carrier.
Or maybe the term weed carrier should be reserved for the likes of Gudda Gudda, The Bravehearts, Freeky Zeeky, Shorty Shitstain, Shawn Wigs, everyone in Harlem World except Loon etc etc.
i'm surprised nobody has brought up Lord have mercy,Rosco P Coldchain or Bohagen as part of the best weed carrier convo
ReplyDeletesaw somebody mention Roc Marciano and let the record show that Consequence had him and a pre Pulitzer Kendrick Lamar on the same track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3xk1XJbZd4
also i think Ice Burgandy should get a shout on the best weed carrier list just cause i loved that P.I.R.U tape
ReplyDeleteAnd on the subject of Brick Squad, shout out Wooh Da Kid's I Prefer.
ReplyDeleteman this 2011 consequence/marci/kendrick song is fucking great!!! originally kendrick was jay rock's hype man/weed carrier so this is actually a #classic #weedcarrierpossecut
ReplyDeleteConsequence the #tastemaker.
