The Ice Is Right

"Yo, how did he go out?
HE WENT OUT LIKE A BITCH!
So ladies, we just ain't talkin' 'bout you
'Cause some of y'all n*ggas is bitches 2"

Ice-T - Bitches 2
(From O.G. Original Gangster album/VHS tape; 1991)

All factoid, zero tabloid: there has never been a better example of "you made it a hot line, I made it a hot song" than Ice-T's Bitches 2. A random Bushwill Bill lyric from Size Ain't Shit expanded into a full fledged life lesson consisting of 4 different flesh & bone examples of 4 different full steezy fellas. People sleep on Ice-T's songwriting but that man was penning Rap gospel between 1986 and 1991.

  3. Ice-T is a top 3 west coast rapper and I will not hear any arguments to the contrary.

  4. Yohan: no argument from me

  5. Who are the other two? Cube & Snoop? Quik is just outside IMO

  6. ^ My exact thoughts.

For me, in order, it's Cube, T, then Mac Dre.

I think the discussion outside of these three is more interesting. You have Snoop, 40, Suga Free, Too $hort, Jacka, and Quick. Can't categorize these as neat as the top 3, imo.

  7. There's also the thorny issue of 2Pac. I don't think of him as a west coast rapper meself, although I'm not quite sure which region he belongs to.

When Biz said "I'm from everywhere!" he coulda been talking about 2Pac.

  8. Didn't mention him on purpose, partly because his lineage is all over the map, but also because he might be the only rapper whose fans genuinely ruined him for me, the same way Kendrick's fans currently push my buttons. There's 5-10 songs of his I really like though.

But hey, some of my favourite rappers claim him as their no. 1 influence, so I'm not too mad.

  12. For me it's The Jacka first, and then
    E-40, 2pac, Ice-T, Mac Dre... tied!
