(From O.G. Original Gangster album/VHS tape; 1991)
Obligatory wrap-up post of those songs I've played most during the month when coppers were still as hazardous to black people as Covid-19. Fuck the plod and anyone who love 'em. R.I.P George "Big Floyd" Floyd.
Flo Milli - My Attitude (2020)
Max B - Goodman (2020)
Toon ft. LeBron - Another One (2020)
Mozzy - Boyz To Men (2020)
E-40 ft. Suga Free - 19 Dolla Lap Dance (2020)
GetEmTree - Opp Watching (2020)
The Chats - Pub Feed (2020)
The Chats - The Clap (2020)
Other notables: U.K Drill is such a joke of a sub-genre it makes sense that the comedy Grime granddads would sound better doing it than yer average London lad.
What’d you think of the Mozzy album?
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard it. Just some of the singles.
ReplyDeleteFWIW the tremolo guitar sample on pricetag is pretty glorious.
ReplyDeletehttps://youtu.be/tr_3UXNTmEI My fav on the Mozzy. He’s rapping his ass off and they are not many guests so I think the project is good.
ReplyDeleteSuga Free really needs a Tonite Show.
ReplyDelete^ Can recommend Unethical & Undeceitful from the new Mozzy album, if you haven't heard. Think it's at least on par with Boyz To Men, though I like both.
ReplyDeleteEverybody wanna talk Mozzy. What about Flo Milli or The Chats?
ReplyDeleteOn “Not Friendly” I can’t believe it’s taken someone so long to use the “Gucci Bandana” piano,
ReplyDeletePete and Bas are hard
ReplyDeleteHope Flo Milli gets to release an EP/mixtape/album/whatever format we use nowadays. She has 3 legitimate good songs out in a (relatively) short peroid of time which reminds me of OMB Peezy's short impeccable run a few years back before he fucked it up with a few horrible mixtapes.
ReplyDeleteOff topic: do you have an alternative link to your 25 greatest Harlem rap songs on Complex? Original links from Twitter and google don't seem to work anymore.
The Complex thing seems to have vanished. Maybe Shiest Bubz had it removed? 😄
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was thinking about the OMB Peezy comparison too, which works right down to the fact she's from Alabama.
I could really do with a thinkpiece about how Harlem henchmen / thug rappers get old. Hard to imagine Shiest Bubz comfortably living off 2000-2010 royalties, alternatively I don't see him working as a bank teller or math teacher. R.I.P. Stack Bundles.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Flo Milli has a better career trajectory than rap's current #2 Peezy. Hopefully we get at least one decent EP/mixtape.
Shiest Bubz had some weed company based in the same building as Complex at the time.

Need a Mr. Humpries emoji right now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that, anonymous.
ReplyDelete"As an offshoot of the Harlem Shake, it seems likely that white people and the world at large will retroactively discover and then butcher the Chicken Noodle Soup dance sometime around 2024."
Ho-ly-shit, you went full noztradamus with that one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i23NEQEFpgQ
The worst thing about that is it has well over a hundred million more views than the original 😕
