Generic list post: can you believe 2000 was 20 years ago?

"THERE'S ONLY FIVE YEARS LEFT!" bellowed Busta Rhymes on Everything Remains Raw. Then we all finally got to party like it's 1999, the clock struck midnight, and... ain't a damn thing changed. This was particularly true in Rap because half the biggest anthems of 2000 were released in 1999: Black Rob's Whoa, Method Man & Redman's Y.O.U, Dr. Dre's The Next Episode, Crooklyn Clan's Be Faithful, Jay-Z & UGK's Big Pimpin', DMX's What's My Name and Party Up (Up In Here), Juvenile's U Understand, and Nelly's Country Grammar (Hot Shit).

All of which is a fancy way of reminding all y'all that I dropped a 1999 list last year, and now I'm postin' a 2000 list as a sequel to my recent 1990 list. The 35 best Rap songs of 2000 as according to me.

OutKast ft. Sleepy Brown - So Fresh, So Clean
Ghostface Killah - Saturday Night
Kool G. Rap ft. RZA - Cakes
Mac Dre - Off Tha Rictor
Prodigy - Keep It Thoro
8Ball & MJG - Pimp Hard
M.O.P - Roll Call
DJ Quik - Pitch In On A Party
Shyne ft. Barrington Levy - Bad Boyz
Black Rob ft. G-Dep - B.R.
Three 6 Mafia ft. UGK & Project Pat - Sippin' On Some Syrup
Project Pat - Gorilla Pimp
Cocoa Brovaz - Super Brooklyn
Nelly ft. City Spud - Ride Wit Me
SPM ft. Baby Beesh - Oh My My
Big L Flamboyant
Cam'Ron ft. Prodigy - Losin' Weight
Mystikal - Big Truck Boys
Bumpy Knuckles - Industry Shakedown
Trick Daddy ft. Trina, Deuce Poppito & Co - Shut Up
Trina - Pull Over
De La Soul ft. Redman - Oooh
Big Tymers - Get Your Roll On
Mad Skillz - Ghost Writer
Snoop Dogg ft. Kokane & Suga Free - Bring It On
C-Murder ft. Magic & Snoop Dogg - Down For My N*ggaz
Big Pun - N*gga Shit
K-Rino ft. DJ Screw - Why Ya Wanna Hate?
Beanie Sigel - The Truth
Field Mob - Project Dreamz
AZ - I Don't Give A F*ck
Ruff Ryders ft. Snoop Dogg, Yung Wun, Scarface & Jadakiss - World War III
Jakki Tha Motamouth ft. Copywrite - Widespread
Ludacris - Southern Hospitality

Note: if people can dance to songs by/featuring a serial groomer like Drake then I can stan for SPM's one legit 5/5 song.

  1. Classic Quik song. Probably my fav song about not actually enjoying the party. Great example of the Everyman/slice of life quality he excelled at.

  2. LOL @ listing Trina's Da Baddest Bitch in both the 1999 and 2000 lists.

  3. Its funny in the early 2000s people thought rap music was changing for the worse but when you look back at it now a lot of it has held up just as well as the early to mid 90's that most people consider the golden era.

  4. Is AZ's I Don't Give A Fuck the G.O.A.T fake Primo beat?

  5. Good selection. As with late 93 into 94 there's stuff carried over from the previous year but that's because good music has staying power. Next Episode in particular popped for a 2-3 years.

  6. I reckon The Next Episode has become Dre's biggest song in the U.K. I base that on it being the song I hear most frequently in bars/video I see most frequently on the music channels.

And why not? It's by far his best single not from The Chronic innit.

  7. Also R.I.P to Hostyle from Screwball.

Had planned to include H-O-S-T-Y-L-E in this list until I realised the 12" dropped in 1999.

In fact, all the best songs from that first Screwball album dropped on 12" in 1999 😕

  14. This was the year Westwood the album 1 came out, the best intro to a mixtape ever.

  15. Some 2000's jams that would be on my list:

Scarface – Last Of A Dying Breed
    Twista – Victory Or Death
    Half-A-Mill – Thug Luv
    Nature – We Ain’t Friends
Tela – The World Ain’t Enough
Prodigy – Genesis / YBE ft BG
Nas ft Prodigy - Self Conscience
    E-40 - Nah, Nah… ft Nate Dogg
    Big Moe – Barre Baby
Eightball & MJG – Buck Bounce ft DJ Quik
Snoop Dogg – Hennessy and Buddah ft Kokane
    504 Boyz – Wobble Wobble
    Shyne - Watcha Gonna Do

If I had to pick another Quik song from that album it'd probably be How Come. Balance & Options isn't talked about as much as some of his other albums but it's a good one for sure.

    1. The only “bad” DJ Quik album is Under The Influence and even that had a couple dope songs on there

  16. Barre Baby is a great shout.

That Twista is 1999 though, so I gotta disqualify it.

  17. hell of a list here. might see about putting together a spotify playist.

hard agree with fred re: "wobble wobble".

  18. Fair enough for the Twista, my copy of the cd says 2000 but then I went on ze discogz and it does say that a 2xLP of Legit Ballin already came out in 99, damn.

I'd say that the main problem with Under The Influence is that the mix is a bit plain in a way, it doesn't pop out as much as on his other releases.
