Is Quavo's terrible solo album Auto-Tune's death rattle?

Let's be honest here, chiefs & chiefettes: there hasn't been a Rap song improved by Auto-Tune in a couple of years now, it's one of the two main reasons why 2018 is the blandest year for mainstream choonz in the genre's history, it strips regional Rap styles of all their geographical twangs into sterile RapCaviar fodder, and when Simon Reynolds is writing thinkpieces celebrating it and illustrating his points with some of the dullest songs Future and Migos have ever recorded then you know it's definitely time to leave That Funny Voice Shit™ in the past innit?

Sleep tight, sweet pitch-corrector... we'll always have the time Jadakiss accidentally called you "Audio-Tunes."

  1. (Obviously I didn't actually listen to the terrible Quavo solo album, nor do I need to listen to it to know exactly how bad it is.)

  2. You probably do need to listen to the Quavo album because it's far worse than you'd expect.

  7. I've never ever heard a Lil' Xan song and I wanna keep it that way.

Wish I'd heard of Thierra Whack before now so I coulda been the first person to pull up with a Thierra Henry pun.

  9. Also point out that I didn't actually read the Simon Reynolds Auto-Tune thinkpiece. Well, I skimmed a couple of paragraphs but had to Red X the tab out of embarrassment when I saw the words Queen Bey.

    1. This #FutureHive thing on Twitter is funny because most of them thought he was trash when he was actually good from 2011-2014.

  11. What's the other main reason?

  12. Boring mid-tempo production which doesn't knock.

Rollin', rollin', rollin', Jackie Chain hadn't slept in weeks until he heard the default sound of 2018 mainstream Rap.

    1. Who do you think are producers doing good work now? I think London on da Track is still a good producer. I think Metro was always overrated but (like Future) as soon as he became meme-like on Twitter his beats have been sooooo boring.

  14. There are no good Autotuned tracks in the history of popular music. Not one. Not even when used ironically.

  15. the quavo album closes with actual vocoder action which could be a positive sign of things to come

  16. I like the Baton Rouge guys like Trel Itz A Hit and Que Fillz.

I like whoever did DaBoii's Onna Gang and Valee & Jeremih's Womp Womp too.

  19. It’s definitely one of the weakest years for popular rap songs because a comedian has the number one song on urban radio for two weeks here. I’m actually not mad at him because it’s uptempo, has an underused 80s r&b sample (same one as Warren G’s “This D.J.”) and Lil Duval, Snoop & FL legend Ballgreezy sound like they’re actually having fun on the song. Which those two things alone make it stand out in the summer of “The Canadian”’s boring ass songs.

  20. This DJ is cool but that sample should always be associated with Eric B. & Rakim first.

  21. new shy glizzy album is a good recent example of subtle audiotune done well

  22. autotune, which, lezfaceit, was just vocoder in a new technology guise, will rise again. might need the 25 year break as the transition from zapp to akon required.

definitely true that she's been on the dwindle. probably only gets worse. if jay z takes credit, i take the louvre cause IM PEI'd.

  23. I still enjoy Autotune when executed well but hearing how good Young Thug sang raps live makes me wish he tried not using it sometimes. Also A-Wax is now sounding like all the first wave T-Pain autotune followers hadn't worked out how to use it properly yet.

  24. This post was a trick question.

Auto-Tune's #actual death rattle was when A$AP Folky Post Malone started shrieking through it on that Kanye West song with the Mystery Of Love sample.
