(From Aint I (Remix) single; 2008)
Remember, remember the 25th of November for being the 10th anniversary of the Ain't I remix. A song which keeps getting better with time and deserves an in-depth Oral History Of.. Red Bull TV video. Call me an old sage if you want, but I knows my onions and Atlanta just doesn't make 'em like this anymore.
as soon as ATL rappers made "autotuned to death, slow & boring" trap rap the default sound instead of sticking to the creative production and faster tempos of bass music and the swag/strip club rap era (Travis Porter, Rich Kidz etc) they fell the fuck off. even Dro was making Autotune rap. YUCK!! we might need a Rich Kidz & Travis Porter best of playlists.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Young Dro, i don't know how "All That Money" wasn't pushed as a single. personal classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPz3g9_VWVs
ReplyDeleteWas Party Like A Rockstar by Shop Boyz the birth of Atl swag-rap?
ReplyDeleteI’m not sure but D4L “Scotty” was probably the song that started it off.
DeleteNot saying I completely disagree with you, but is the consensus here that Future circa 56 Nights and Young Thug during Barter 6 aren't worthwhile?
ReplyDeleteThe 5/6th generation (not sure where we at right now) of trap ATL rappers bore me to death too. Don't care much for the Lil Baby, Gunna's and Hoodrich Pablo Juan at all, the sound is stale as hell.
This may be a hot take but 2011-2014 Future >>>>>>> 2015-present Future. Creative production, wider range of emotions, songs actually had concepts, great songwriting. But more importantly I think as soon as he left the Mike Will, Sonny Digital, Nard & B production trust and went to the vastly overrated Metro Boomin & 808 Mafia his music has suffered.
DeleteBarter 6 was cool but Thug’s 2015 was low key ruined by that huge leak. There were a lot of dope songs in there. Also he needs a strong A&R because Birdman is the reason Tha Tour pt. 1 is so great. His music hasn’t been the same to me post 2015. His production and bars have gotten much more generic.
DeleteI didn't like 56 Nights meself, but I've only ever been a very casual Future listener anyway.
ReplyDeleteWhat this post is specifically referring to is 2018 Atlanta.
Scotty is more like a genre unto itself.
ReplyDeleteThug's 2014/2015 (including the leaks) was amazing. I think Barter 6 was his most coherent album to date, but overall you can safely say he amassed quite the catalogue even outside all of his albums. Didn't Noz write a best 50 Thug songs of 2014?
ReplyDeleteI'm not partial to 2015 being Future's standout year (although I have some good memories from that summer), but I do think around that time was when he started leaning into his codeine infused style and slowed up his music by a lot, which has now become the norm in ATL. I think Beast Mode started it off, could be wrong on that account.
Didn't T.I.P. did the whole Yung LA thing just because he had a beef with Lo and he wanted to piss him off with signing somebody who sounded just like him?
ReplyDelete19&Boomin was dope imo, but Londonondatrack was better tho(during the period when metro's music was still enjoyable)
this whole era is a big blind spot for me I've wanted to go back to it for yrs but I dunno where to start. I like the rappers birthed by all it
ReplyDeleteD4l franchize boyz etc are p handy to track it's everyone else I wanna hear
ReplyDeleteMan we got a Leland Austin song on the post and you ppl want to talk about Young Thug and Future smh.
ReplyDelete*Futuristic Leland Austin

Yung L.A's album is/was on YouTube. It's not bad.
ReplyDeletedamn i cannot seem to find it... did he put it out under a different title after it got shelved?
ReplyDeletei also did not realize nard & b had been around so long but they produced "futuristic love" !!! tbh both migos and future fucked up/started to decline as soon as they stopped working with nard & b
It was a playlist called Futuristic Leland I think. Hmmmm can't seem to find it in there now tho.
