Nigerian Whip

Late pass! Another unfortunate consequence of Brexit is that Nigerian Afro-Bashment Grime is now officially better than proper British Dunkirk spirit Grime. Not a particularly impressive feat on paper since the only Legit Jam™ of the traditional British boutique-Grime revival is that Stormzy tune with the prophetic David Moyes zinger, but a banger is a banger no matter the competition and this bangs:

DJ Consequence ft. YCEE - In A Benz
(From In A Benz single; 2016)

Bit unfair that YCEE is now the Juice guy when Omo Alhaji is still his best song. Bitch, there's consequences if your wrong track blows up. *EDIT* Bitch, there's also coincidences when Maine Musik drops a Soulja Slim tribute over the Consequences beat on the same damn day I dropped this post:

Maine Musik - Soulja Slim Flow
(From t'internet; 2017)

  1. I like that Stormzy track but Kano had 2 legit bangers around the same time with Garage Skank and 3 Wheel Ups that were better

  2. I wouldn't put Kano in the "traditional British boutique-Grime revival" category because he's an O.G and he's always been a bit more of a straightforward rapper than his peers.

I'm thinking more of new artists making Grime, or all them self-consciously retro songs by Wiley, Skepta etc.

  3. Juice becoming so big over here surprised me.

    The Maleek Berry effect.

  4. Definitely the Afrobeats video I saw most on AKA and Flava (R.I.P)

  5. Looks like "Soulja Slim Flow" is produced by Timothy Hills tho, not Trel itz A Hit... I guess the beat is a little bit different? Did "it's finna get real with Timothy Hills" just rip off Trel's "Consequences" beat?

  6. Hmmmm. It's the exact same beat as Consequences and Trel said he produced it on IG.

  7. Strange having the Timothy Hills tag tho wonder what that's about?? But as long as it's Trel approved!! Anyway, looks like Tim's got some heat of his own, too: https://soundcloud.com/timhillsproductions/wade2x-uzi

  8. If we're talking grime revival let's ask why there hasn't been a Racist People 2 by Roll Deep yet. Get Skepta too and it's perfectly positioned for Wiley to get Macklemore inspirational radio crossover success.
