Fucked up thing is I listened to the White Gzus mixtape, honed in on Top as its undisputed highlight since Gzus Piece seems to thrive best over beats with lots of space for him to nonchalantly dispense heaps of zingers in a John Jackson stylee, uploaded the tagless version to Audiomack, and then kept it movin', utterly oblivious to the fact that the project's other great song was tucked away 15 tracks deep on a 16 track mixtape. If only the wack 2014 Treated Crew album had sounded like Money Up or Top.

Tops a favourite "just top" always gets the lolz
ReplyDeleteI really like Pimp On over the Face sample too.
Whoa Chris Crockers wiki page is detailed.
ReplyDeleteChris Crocker is definitely the type of lad who edits his own Wiki page.
ReplyDeleteThis mixtape is very slept on
ReplyDelete808 Mafia killed it in 2014.
ReplyDeleteEy "Pimp on" puts me to sleep since weeks
ReplyDelete"Pimp On" is cool but it reminds me of both Psychodrama's "Magic" (which it's obv a tribute to at some level) & Scarface's "Now I Feel Ya" which flipped the same Bootsy Collins sample. Obviously this record uses the same beat as Pac's "Do For Love" but I think the rapped chorus differentiates it just enough, like I found myself hearing that bassline and wanting to put on the White Gzus version, not the Pac one with the R&B vocals on the hook.
ReplyDeletePimp On was a very odd choice for the 'tape's first proper single, especially when they splashed out for an 808 Mafia beat and that's the song which is gettin' club play in Chi according to Drew.

ReplyDeletesounds like they sampled it replayed on the face song itself to my ears. a lot of remade rap songs/popular samples , Westside Story was like that too.
